“…The precursor, which was made of BaCO 3 , CaCO 3 , and CuO in the ratio 2 : 2 : 3, was sintered at 900 C for 12 h in flowing high-purity oxygen gas. Since the stoichiometric mixture ratio, namely, HgO : Ba 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 -O y ¼ 1 : 1, tends to result in the formation of CaHgO 2 as a secondary phase, 7) we adopted the slightly Hg-deficient starting composition of Hg 0:75 Ba 2 Ca 2 Cu 3 O y (HgO : Ba 2 Ca 2 -Cu 3 O y ¼ 0:75 : 1). “…Shimoyama et al demonstrated that partial replacement of Hg by a transition metal cation, M, coupled with the substitution of Ba by Sr, in the (Hg 1−x M x )Sr 2 (Ln 1−y Ca y ) n−1 Cu n O 2n+2+δ system (n = 1 and 2, Ln = trivalent lanthanide) afforded a significant improvement in flux pinning characteristics [6,7]. The transition metal cation adopts a pivotal structural role in such materials, as demonstrated by the fact that members of the hypothetical HgSr 2 Ca n−1 Cu n O 2n+2+δ system cannot be prepared even under the forcing conditions of high pressure methods [8]. The stabilizing influence of the transition metal cation arises from the additional oxygen atoms associated with the tetrahedral or octahedral coordination environment of the transition metal, which serves to fix additional oxygen atoms in the (Hg,M)O δ plane [9].…”
