High-Pressure Synthesis and Chemical Bonding of Barium Trisilicide BaSi3

Abstract: BaSi3 is obtained at pressures between 12(2) and 15(2) GPa and temperatures from 800(80) and 1050(105) K applied for one to five hours before quenching. The new trisilicide crystallizes in the space group I4¯2m (no. 121) and adopts a unique atomic arrangement which is a distorted variant of the CaGe3 type. At ambient pressure and 570(5) K, the compound decomposes in an exothermal reaction into (hP3)BaSi2 and two amorphous silicon-rich phases. Chemical bonding analysis reveals covalent bonding in the silicon pa… Show more

“…Ca and Sr charges are similar and higher in value than the Ba charge. 49 51 The charge of the hydrogen anion, , decreases in compression (in absolute numbers—toward neutral charge) regardless of the structure. Within the I 4/ mmm tetrahydrides, the charge is highest (the most negatively charged) in Sr and then decreases for Ca and furthermore for Ba, while BaH 4 is smaller than its tetragonal analogue.…”

“…Additional information can be extracted from the shape of QTAIM atoms. In fact, La is rather spherical, which is typical for cations in similar compounds, 9 , 45 47 and both Ge and Pd basins possess a polyhedral shape. What is more, not only the shared faces between Ge2 and Ge3 are flat, which is characteristic for homopolar bonds, but also those between Ge and Pd.…”

“…The obtained flaky CI/SiBaFe particles exhibited a small average diameter, which reduced the possibility for the formation of a conductive network among particles. On the other hand, low conductivity of the doped Si and Ba led to the weakened electron transport capacity of flaky CI/SiBaFe-15 particles [44][45][46]. Consequently, the ε ′ and ε ′′ of CI/SiBaFe-15 were significantly lower than that of CI at room temperature.…”
