High-pressure generation using double stage micro-paired diamond anvils shaped by focused ion beam

Abstract: Micron-sized diamond anvils with a 3 μm culet were successfully processed using a focused ion beam (FIB) system and the generation of high pressures was confirmed using the double stage diamond anvil cell technique. The difficulty of aligning two second-stage micro-anvils was solved via the paired micro-anvil method. Micro-manufacturing using a FIB system enables us to control anvil shape, process any materials, including nano-polycrystalline diamond and single crystal diamond, and assemble the sample exactly … Show more

“…Using a double stage mechanism, pressures above 500 GPa have been reported [27,48,49]. However, so far no other groups have succeeded in generating similar high pressures using this technique [50,51]. In particular, the pressure distribution around the tip of the second anvil remains unknown.…”

“…DACs are currently capable of obtaining pressures in excess of 400 GPa. With particular anvil geometry including the double stage arrangement [48,50], there is currently an international effort to extend the pressure range to 1 TPa and beyond. The extended pressure range will revolutionarily redefine the scope of HP research.…”

“…These peaks are shifted from their typically quoted values but with the charge neutralization system in use it is difficult to precisely locate carbon peaks. The separation of the two peaks, however, is known to be approximately 1 eV and the FWHM of the peaks for this system at this pass energy are 1.1 eV for sp 2 carbon and 1.45 eV for sp 3 carbon. The ratios then of the peaks were determined by holding the FWHM and approximate spacing constant and fitting the height and positions only.…”

“…1 Recent advances have made it possible to generate much higher pressures up to 1065 GPa in DACs by utilizing diamond anvils which have 'second stage' pressure generators on the culets of primary diamond anvils. 2, 3 These second stages have been developed by various methods. Dubrovinskaia et.…”
