High precision measurement on the absolute localization accuracy of TerraSAR-X

Abstract: The German SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellites TerraSAR-X (TSX-1) and TanDEM-X (TDX-1), launched in June 2007 and June 2010 respectively, provide an unprecedented geometric accuracy. Previous studies showed an absolute pixel localization for both sensors at the centimeter level [4] [5] [6]. However, recent measurements show that in range, under extraordinary good conditions, a location accuracy of even a few millimeters seems to be attainable. While on a long-term scale, we observed a slow variation of s… Show more

“…However, SAR offers several additional capabilities. The objective of this paper is to highlight the ability to provide also absolute localization accuracy of bright, well-detectable radar targets at centimeter level [1][2][3][4] with respect to a given geodetic reference frame like International Terrestrial Reference Frame, release 2014 (ITRF2014) [5]. Such a high accuracy-where TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X lead worldwide among space borne SAR sensors [6]-can be achieved only if the SAR data are processed and calibrated with meticulous care and if they are corrected for well-known effects such as wave propagation and solid Earth dynamics, as it is done in geodesy [7].…”

“…The measurement series on hand is based on a CR with very precisely known ground coordinates (better than 5 millimeters) which we installed near the geodetic observatory Wettzell, Germany [3] [4]. Up to now, 52 high resolution Spotlight (HS) datatakes were recorded in two different acquisition geometries.…”

“…Previous studies showed a ranging accuracy at the centimeter level [1][2][3][4]. This accuracy level becomes attainable by a thorough design of all subsystems, including the precise orbit determination [5] [6], and the elimination of several processor approximations in the SAR data processing [4].…”
