High precision measurement of germanium isotope ratio variations by multiple collector-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry

Abstract: Multicollector ICP-MS is used for the precise measurement of variations in the isotopic composition of germanium. Argon-based spectral interferences are assessed in the germanium mass region and the repeatability of the following ratios is determined: 74 Ge/ 70 Ge, 73 Ge/ 70 Ge and 72 Ge/ 70 Ge. The isotope ratio repeatability of a mono-elemental solution relative to another mono-elemental solution is better than 0.06% per u at 95% confidence. Variations in sample 74 Ge/ 70 Ge, 73 Ge/ 70 Ge, and 72 Ge/ 70 Ge r… Show more

“…Instrumental mass bias within ICP-MS results from so-called 'space-charge' and 'ion-diffusion' effects on the transmission of ionized particles (Tanner, 1992;Vanhaecke et al, 1993;Maréchal et al, 1999) and has been shown to be sensitive to matrix composition (Galy et al, 2003;Pietruszka et al, 2006). In order to evaluate the possibility of matrix effects from elements that are commonly found in sulfide and sulfate minerals, we performed doping experiments using S spex standard solution mixed with various high-purity element solutions.…”

“…Stable isotope-ratio measurements using MC-ICP-MS have recently found a wider interest [206,[208][209][210][211]. While all isotopes can be used for stable isotope studies, subtle isotopic variations require an uncertainty of better than 0.1 ‰ using the R( 74 Ge/ 70 Ge) ratio; both isotopes have a relatively high abundance, and they exhibit the largest atomic mass difference.…”

“…Lead has four stable isotopes, 204 Pb, 206 Pb, 207 Pb, and 208 Pb, with isotopic abundances of 1.4, 24.1, 22.1, and 52.3 %, respectively, in naturally occurring terrestrial material. Only 204 Pb is primordial; the three heavier isotopes are radiogenic.…”

“…In addition to its high mass resolution and high sensitivity, its unique flat topped peaks produced in low resolution mode provide for a more accurate and precise isotope ratio measurement. [7][8][9][10][11] This has been reported to be better than 0.04% precision with a single detector and as low as 0.002% on instruments equipped with a multi-collector detector.…”
