High precision hyperfine structure measurements in185Re and187Re

Abstract: The hyperfine structure of the atomic levels 5d56s26Ss/2 and 4P5/2 in ~SSRe and ~STRe has been studied with high precision by atomic-beam magnetic-resonance. Additional measurements were performed in the 5d56s 2 4G5/2 and 5d66s('D9/2 states of ~SVRe. For the interpretation of the results eigenvectors in intermediate coupling have been derived by a least squares fit of all known levels of the configurations (5d+6s) 7.The ratio B(85Re)/B(~87Re) is the same for the 6S5/2 and the 4P5/2 state within the error limit… Show more

“…The various reported quadrupole moments of 186,188Re are collected in Table 2. As may be seen from the table, in this case the larger values derived from NQA are further from the precise results of [30] (and from theory) than the smaller values of the present work, which agree within quoted errors with the latter. The precision of NQA is of course not comparable with that of ABR, but since the model assumptions used in deriving Q in the two techniques are quite different, it provides a useful systematic check.…”

“…The experimental |g K − g R | exp values for the K π = 4 − , 5 + , and (8 + ) bands are given in Table III. The value Q 0 = 6.18(6) eb, deduced from the measured spectroscopic quadrupole moment of Q = +0.618(6) eb [23] for the K π = 1 − ground state, was used. This assumption is reasonable, since the quadrupole moments are known to be essentially constant with excitation energy for nuclei in this region [24].…”

“…However, a few highly sophisticated studies probing the hfs and IS of Re I have already been accomplished. In 1981 B/ittgenbach et al [3] performed precise measurements of optical transitions of metastable low-lying Re levels and contributed a fs calculation of the even configurations (5d+ 6s) 7, taking * Research scientist from the University of Istanbul, Turkey into account the electrostatically correlated spin-orbit interaction in second order for the interpretation of their experimental hfs-and IS data. For the odd configurations (5d+ 6s)66p the fs-calculations of Wyart [4] show that the configuration interaction between 5d 6 6p, 5d 5 6s6p, and 5dg6sZ6p is extremely strong.…”
