High-power radio frequency generation in a hollow-cathode discharge

Abstract: High-power rf oscillations are obtained in a resistive load installed in the external electrical circuit of a low-pressure magnetic-field-free hollow-cathode discharge. These intense rf oscillations have been shown to be due to a collisionless instability of the cathode sheath. A very simple device based on this effect is shown to serve as a convenient and powerful rf oscillator. Typical results first achieved without any optimization, for frequencies of 20–30 MHz and load resistances of several tens of ohms, … Show more

“…The same phenomenon can be used to generate intense pulses of coherent HF radiation. In [1][2][3], the Technion group from Israel has pre sented the first designs and results of studies for intense HF pulse generators based on gas discharge hollow cathode chambers. The best results of this group, which were obtained in different regimes, are the fol lowing: the maximum duration of HF pulses is 11.5 μs, their maximum intensity is 121 kW, the high frequency is 35-39 MHz, and the pulse repetition rate attains 100 Hz (in Xe at a pressure of 19-21 mTorr) [3].…”

“…We have also shown recently the potential of such a device to serve as a powerful rf oscillator and suggested a scheme of using it. 2 Here we present experimental data showing the maximal capabilities of this kind of rf oscillator and discuss the physical processes controlling the oscillator parameters in view of its practical application.…”
