High-performance water-based barrier coatings for the corrosion protection of structural steel

Abstract: This article provides an overview of the outcomes of a European-funded project called BarrierPlus. A new type of water-based barrier coating was developed for structural steel applications. Advantages of this coating include enhanced moisture resistance, low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and one-component self-crosslinking free of isocyanates. To enable this performance, a latex polymer binder was uniquely designed without using soaplike molecules, known as surfactants, to form the dispersion. By minimizi… Show more

“…So far, little attention has been paid to produce such industrially relevant colloidal formulations. For example, Lansalot, D′Agosto, and co‐workers recently demonstrated that different kinds of latex particles (40 wt % solids), incorporating less than 2 wt % hydrophilic PEG, PAA, PMAA, or poly(sodium 4‐styrene sulfonate) (PSSNa), could be produced by using this strategy, starting from the corresponding hydrophilic macroRAFT agent for poly(vinylidene chloride), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), and acrylic latexes . It was also demonstrated in the last case that the strategy was compatible with well‐established film crosslinking strategies (namely, 2‐(acetoacetoxy)ethyl methacrylate (AAEM)/hexamethylenediamine and diacetone acrylamide (DAAm)/adipic acid dihydrazide (ADH)) and that the water‐barrier properties of the resulting films could be improved compared to the use of low molar mass surfactants.…”

“…Coalescents are solvent-class products routinely incorporated in water-based paint formulations containing polymeric emulsions as binders to improve their application [1]. In addition to providing polymeric phase plasticity without structural changes, these agents also optimize the formation of films, resulting in continuous and homogeneous finishes under different conditions of temperature and humidity [2]. Its presence in the solution also makes the coating more 'ecological' compared to traditional recipes that use organic dispersants to fulfill the same functions [3].…”
