High Performance, Low Cost, Colorless ONU for WDM-PON

Abstract: Abstract:We give an overview of key technologies for realizing WDM-PON. In particular, we highlight promising developments and directions in widely tunable laser technologies for achieving a high performance, colorless ONU at the cost points required for access networks.

“…As it was shown in [1], the maximum SSD for residential users (FTTB) is eight hours. For the brownfield scenario the maximal SSD thus is eight hours as the OLT port can be put to sleep only if all the corresponding ONUs are also in sleep mode.…”

“…INTRODUCTION ccess networks are rapidly evolving to accommodate larger and more diverse types of terminals, services, bandwidth demands and higher reliability requirements. Further, advancements in the underlying technology are allowing for a decrease of components costs (e.g., colorless Optical Network Units (ONUs) [1]) and an increase of the passive reach. Consequently, operators are considering the migration of existing access networks (e.g., combining optical fiber and copper or using GPON) to new architectures in order to support potential new requirements (e.g.…”

“…A number of multiplexing techniques for increasing the data capacity through a single optical fiber have been proposed comprising wavelength [11,12], polarization [13,14], phase [14], amplitude [15,16] and time dimensions [17,18]. An elegant approach that has attracted significant attention is mode division multiplexing (MDM) [19], realized by combining or separating modes at the multiplexer and demultiplexer for transmitting independent data streams.…”

“…To implement a colorless ONU, several methods were designed. [13][14][15] However, once the colorless ONU is introduced, Brillouin backscattering (BB) 16,17 becomes worse. To solve the aforementioned problems, these two systems are established via VPI simulators 18 as follows: (1) we analyze the influence on the system 1 performances, which mainly includes the BER and power penalty, and a lowpower penalty is guaranteed without degrading the BER of system 1, and (2) using an empty carrier generated by an OLT along with the downstream signal for upstream transmission, we achieve a colorless ONU in system 2.…”
