Despite the fact that perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have a strong potential as a next-generation photovoltaic technology due to continuous efficiency improvements and the tunable properties, some important obstacles remain before industrialization is feasible. For example, the selection of low-cost or easy-to-prepare materials is essential for back-contacts and hole-transporting layers. Likewise, the choice of conductive substrates, the identification of large-scale manufacturing techniques as well as the development of appropriate aging protocols are key objectives currently under investigation by the international scientific community. This Review analyses the above aspects and highlights the critical points that currently limit the industrial production of PSCs and what strategies are emerging to make these solar cells the leaders in the photovoltaic field.

Tandem solar cells consisting of perovskite and silicon absorbers have the potential to outperform respective state-ofthe-art single junction efficiencies. However, their development requires the gentle deposition of a transparent electrode onto the hybrid perovskite and its organic layers. Implementation of large area graphene obtained by chemical vapour deposition seems to be an excellent solution. In this manuscript we present the impact of graphene on perovskite solar cells and their organic layers. Direct application of graphene on CH3NH3PbI3 is limited by a highly defective interface but insertion of spiro-OMeTAD enables a defect free implementation. Solar cells containing transparent graphene contacts approach identical electrical performance compared to devices with standard Au contacts. Hall-effect measurements of graphene on various organic thin-films, revealed the importance of field effect doping. Gained knowledge enabled the development of a strategy to increase the charge carrier density in graphene by 60 %, while lowering graphene sheet resistance by 24 %. This combined route of spiro-OMeTAD and stabilized adsorbent doping is an important step towards the targeted application in high performance monolithic perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells..

Since their emergence in 2013, perovskite solar cells have reached remarkable efficiencies exceeding 22%. Such rapid development of this technology has been possible, in part, due to the feed of ideas from previous research in organic photovoltaics (OPVs) and light emitting diodes (OLEDs). This comprehensive review discusses the various polymer strategies that have led to the success of perovskite devices: from hole and electron transporting materials to polymer templating agents. This review further covers how these strategies potentially serve to overcome the two major obstacles that stand in the way of global implementation of perovskite solar cells; stability and J-V curve hysteresis. Through reference and comparison of OPV, OLED, and perovskite technologies, we highlight the need for a unified approach to establish appropriate control systems and ageing protocols that are necessary to further research in this exciting direction.
