High-performance inulin and oligofructose prebiotics increase the intestinal absorption of iron in rats with iron deficiency anaemia during the growth phase

Abstract: Considering the high frequency of anaemia due to Fe deficiency, it is important to evaluate the effects of prebiotics on the absorption of Fe. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of high-performance (HP) inulin, oligofructose and synergy1 during recovery from anaemia in rats through the intestinal absorption of Fe, food intake, body growth, caecal pH and weight of the intestine. Wistar rats (n 47) were fed with rations of AIN93-G with no Fe to induce Fe deficiency anaemia. At 36 d of life,… Show more

“…For confirmation of the induction of anemia, values below 11 g/dL were considered [10]. Therefore, after the induction of anemia, two groups with 12 animals each were formed; the animals were fed the following diets in the subsequent two weeks, as follows: (1) Partially hydrolyzed guar gum group (PHGG): A diet containing 75g of partially hydrolyzed guar gum (100g of Nutrisource Fiber—Nestlé ® , American Medical of Brasil Ltd., São Paulo, Brazil) and (2) control group: a diet without dietary fiber, which was replaced by 100 g of corn starch, as suggested in the literature [14].…”

“…As described in the literature, prebiotics act on the absorption of minerals by generating short-chain fatty acids forming soluble complexes, increasing the surface absorption, the number of receptors, and the intestinal beneficial bacterial populations, among other mechanisms [10,11]. …”

“…O peso dos animais foi aferido semanalmente. A partir desses dados foi calculado o ganho de peso semanal e o Coeficiente de Eficiência Alimentar (CEA), por meio da equação: CEA= ganho de peso (g) semanal/consumo alimentar (g) semanal 12 . Ao final das 12 semanas, foi realizado o Teste Oral de Tolerância à Glicose (TOTG) 13 .…”

“…Similarly, Yasuda et al [15] demonstrated improvement in hemoglobin repletion efficiency in young anemic pigs fed corn soybean meal supplemented with 4% dietary inulin. Recently, Freitas et al [23] showed the benefit of inulin and oligofructose prebiotics on the regeneration of haemoglobinic mass and increased intestinal Fe absorption in anaemic rats. However, to date, the comparison of the effect of prebiotics (with different fructan and arabinoxylan content) both from raw and processed wheat on Fe absorption has not been investigated.…”
