High performance hydrogen/oxygen terminated CVD single crystal diamond radiation detector

Abstract: We report the performance of a single crystal diamond radiation detector with gold films on hydrogen-terminated diamond as electrical contacts and oxygen-terminated diamond as surface isolation between electrodes. The origin-symmetric current-voltage characteristics showed excellent Ohmic contact behavior. An extremely low dark current value of 7.46 × 10−13 A/mm2 was measured at an electric field of 1 V/μm. The charge collection efficiency and energy resolution of this detector were 99.01% and 1.5% for holes, … Show more

“…After a sharp rise by three orders of magnitude, the current roughly followed a quadratic dependence, which was attributed to SCLC. A similar super-linear current-voltage characteristics under γ-irradiation recently reported by Su et al 19 was also interpreted in terms of charge injection effects. Finally, Lohstroh et al 7 investigated the influence of the field strength down to very low values.…”

“…Summarizing these results from the literature, a comprehensive and quantitative model for the mechanism of gain formation is still missing as highlighted in one of the latest publications. 19 In the present work, we will describe calculations for the carrier dynamics in a structurally perfect diamond crystal, which contains nitrogen and boron as only chemical defects. It is operated as solid state ionization chamber with two ohmic contacts under irradiation by a beam of energetic photons that is only weakly attenuated during its passage so that energy loss and e-h pair generation occur homogeneously within the crystal.…”

“…Over the past decade, the use of ionizing radiation detectors has rapidly increased. In particular, X-ray detectors have been widely used in medical imaging, aerospace, defense, and security applications as well as research in nuclear physics, high-energy physics, astrophysics, and radiochemistry. , The considerable interest in low SWaP (size, weight, and power) X-ray detectors has led to an increase in demand for innovative miniaturized and lightweight X-ray sensor devices that show high sensitivity with lower power, good reliability, and good stability …”
