In this investigation distinctive self-compacting concretes (SCC) containing both marble + granite (MG) powder and hooked-end steel fibers (HESF) are investigated. A mixture of conventional SCC (reference), and other five samples containing MG and steel fiber (SF) contents are provided, i.e. 20MG, 20SF, 30MG + 10SF, 20SF and 30MG + 20 SF. Both the fresh and hardened properties of the modified self-compacting concretes are evaluated. Workability of the SCC samples represented by slump flow, L-box, V-funnel, J-ring and flowability T500 is examined. The properties of hardened state of the SCC samples at 7 and 28 days are also evaluated. Modulus of elasticity, water absortion, voids index (indicatig porosity), and specific mass are attained. Comparisons among specific strengths and consumptions of cement per compressive strengths are also provided. The SCC/30MG/10SF sample has a specific strength ∼50% higher than the conventional SCC sample. When a ratio involving porosity per cement consumption per tensile strength is evaluated, the SCC/30MG/10SF sample has this ratio ∼80% higher than the SCC reference. Additionally, the best result of consumption of cement (CC) per compressive strength (CS) (1.28x lower than the SCC reference) at 28 days is that of the SCC/30MG/10SF sample (5.03 kg/m3. MPa−1). This indicates that an environmentally friendly aspect associated with low relative cost, which is an important parameter to consider in future SCC mixture designing.

Cracking in concrete structures can significantly affect their structural integrity and eventually lead to catastrophic failure if undetected. Recent advances in sensor technology for structural health monitoring techniques have led to the development of new and improved sensors for real-time detection and monitoring of cracks in various applications, from laboratory tests to large structures. In this study, triaxial accelerometers have been employed to detect and locate micro- and macrocrack formation in plain self-compacting concrete (SCC) and steel-fibre-reinforced SCC (SFRSCC) beams under three-point bending. Experiments were carried out with triaxial accelerometers mounted on the surface of the beams. The experimental results revealed that triaxial accelerometers could be used to identify the locations of cracks and provide a greater quantity of useful data for more accurate measurement and interpretation. The study sheds light on the structural monitoring capability of triaxial acceleration measurements for SFRSCC structural elements that can act as an early warning system for structural failure.

Deep learning and machine learning‐based prediction of capillary water absorption of hybrid fiber reinforced self‐compacting concrete

Deep auto‐encoders and long short‐term memory methodology (LSTM) based on deep learning as well as support vector regression (SVR) and k‐nearest neighbors (kNN) based on machine learning models for the capillary water absorption prediction of self‐compacting concrete (SCC) with single and binary, ternary, and quaternary fiber hybridization were developed. A macro and two types of micro steel fibers having different aspect ratios, and PVA fiber were used. One hundred and sixty‐eight specimens produced from 24 mixtures were used in the prediction models. The input was the content of cement, fly ash, silica fume, fine and coarse aggregate, water, superplasticizer (SP), macro and micro steel fibers, PVA, time that the specimen was immersed in water, and splitting tensile strength. Water absorption was used as output. As per the ANOVA analysis of the experiment results, the most effective parameters were macro steel fiber and time for tensile strength and water absorption, respectively. Finally, binary hybridization of 1% macro steel fiber and PVA improved the splitting tensile strength while the use of PVA as binary, ternary, and quaternary fiber hybridization increased the water absorption of SCC specimens. The auto‐encoder, LSTM, SVR, and kNN models predicted the water absorption of fiber reinforced SCC with 99.99%, 99.80%, 94.57%, and 95.50% accuracy, respectively. The performance of deep autoencoder in the estimation of water absorption of fiber‐reinforced SCC was superior to the other prediction models.
