The drastic increase in the usage of handheld devices like smartphones, tablets, etc., produce huge traffic on the Internet which are mainly due the video streaming services applications. Due to the limitations of resources (Power, Memory, Processing, etc.), numerous design patterns of the mobile devices and heterogeneous users' expectations, it is difficult to handle those video streaming services requests. In order to provide an expected experience to the end user and to reduce the burden of the service providers, cloud computing provides the most easy and viable solution. A novel framework in cloud environment has been proposed in this paper to provide a good trade-off between the service handling as well as the user experience. The framework covers various aspects related to streaming services such as user experience, content distribution and retrieval, power usage, network analysis, video storage, device analysis on static and runtime conditions, parallel service provision and the experience perceived by user. Since the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) proposed the geospatial Web Processing Service (WPS), standard OGC Web Service (OWS)-based geospatial processing has become the major type of distributed geospatial application. However, improving the performance and sustainability of the distributed geospatial applications has become the dominant challenge for OWSs. This paper presents the construction of an elastic parallel OGC WPS service on a cloud-based cluster and the designs of a high-performance, cloud-based WPS service architecture, the scalability scheme of the cloud, and the algorithm of the elastic parallel geoprocessing. Experiments of the remote sensing data processing service demonstrate that our proposed method can provide a higher-performance WPS service OPEN ACCESSSustainability 2015, 7 14246 that uses less computing resources. Our proposed method can also help institutions reduce hardware costs, raise the rate of hardware usage, and conserve energy, which is important in building green and sustainable geospatial services or applications.

The advent of the Internet of Things, sensor and social networks, to mention just a few examples, all contribute towards the solid establishment of the Big Data era. High Performance Computing (HPC) becomes necessary for the efficient processing of the massive amounts of data our society generates, and cloud computing is a critical component to deliver this processing power to a broader audience that cannot afford to acquire and maintain such complex computing systems themselves. However, HPC specific technology and performance is not yet apt to be delivered efficiently over highly flexible and dynamic environments, as typically are the virtualized cloud infrastructures.In this thesis, we address challenges that arise in high performance dynamic cloud environments, that are equipped with HPC specific technology, in the context of networking and virtualization. We use InfiniBand, a high performance lossless interconnection network as the basis of our research, and first show that lossless networks pose prime challenges when the nature of the infrastructure is very dynamic, i.e. exhibits continuous changes. Then we propose a network I/O virtualization architecture, the InfiniBand vSwitch architecture, that can make lossless network technologies more favorable in the cloud. Moreover, we propose different network reconfiguration methods to enable performance-driven reconfigurations in very large network topologies that are commonly found in data centers. Performance-driven reconfigurations are frequently needed to adapt to unpredictable workload changes resulting from the shared and on-demand nature of a cloud platform, or when cloud providers employ live migration of virtual machines to optimize the resource usage of their infrastructure. Last but not least, we propose a new Quality-of-Service metric, called delay, to capture the directly observable service degradation in consolidated cloud environments. We suggest that the delay can be used as a direct service level agreement metric between cloud providers and cloud tenants.
