High Performance Alkyd Resin Compositions for Coating

Abstract: New modified alkyd varnishes were prepared by partial replacement of phthalic anhydride with methylene disalicylic acid. Incorporation of this phenolic derivative led to significant improvement in hardness, gloss, and alkali resistance performance.

“…The use of 3,3′-methylene bis(salicylic acid) along with phthalic anhydride in polyester formulation has led to a signifi cant improvement in hardness, gloss and alkali resistance. 6 Polyester coating made from bicyclo[2.2.2] oct-5-ene-2, 3-dicarboxylic acid exhibits high impact strength, fl exural strength, heat resistance and resistance to water. The use of benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride in the preparation of polyester resin has also been reported.…”

“…Alkyd resins owe their wide applications to their versatility and capability to engineer a wide variety of acceptable properties in terms of usage by the Coat-ings industry. Alkyds now account for approximately half of all the resins consumed in the field of protective coatings [1][2][3][4][5][6]. Chemically, alkyd resins have been defined as reaction product of condensation polymerization of polyhydric alcohol, polybasic acid, and monobasic fatty acid (saturated or unsaturated; Figure 1).…”
