High patient satisfaction in 445 patients who underwent fast-track hip or knee replacement

Abstract: Background and purpose — Patient satisfaction is important in fast-track total hip and knee replacement (THR, TKR). We assessed: (1) how satisfied patients were with the treatment; (2) factors related to overall satisfaction; and (3) whether there was a difference between THR and TKR regarding length of stay (LOS) and patient satisfaction.Patients and methods — In this follow-up study, a consecutive series of 445 patients undergoing THR and TKR completed a questionnaire 2 weeks after discharge. LOS and short-t… Show more

“…The literature has established an association between age and clinical outcomes [10], with some variability on how age affects patient satisfaction. Some studies have found similar patient satisfaction in all age groups [4,[37][38][39][40][41], while other studies have reported less satisfaction in younger patients undergoing THA [7]. A possible explanation is that younger patients who may be accustomed to a more active lifestyle are more likely to be negatively affected by hip diseases [7] and have higher expectations compared to older patients undergoing total joint replacement [40].…”

“…There are many studies that discuss patient sex and THA satisfaction [4,7,[39][40][41][42][43][44][45]. Outcome scores in women are often lower than in men measured by both pain and satisfaction measures in some studies [40]. One study, which used the short PSQ [11], strongly associated female sex and dissatisfaction (scaled PSQ score of < 50) with the results of primary THA [46].…”

“…In recent years, minimally invasive fast-track surgery has become the goal for treating hip injury [15]. An incision made with a direct anterior approach during hip surgery relies on an intermuscular plane, resulting in less soft tissue damage.…”

“…In the field of joint replacement surgery, effective pain control has also been shown to result in faster mobilization and earlier patient discharge, reduced complication rates, and increased patient satisfaction [11]. In an era when the quality of medical care is tightly interwoven with economic considerations [1], the implications of those findings are obvious for surgeons and medical institutions alike.…”
