High optical magnetism of dodecahedral plasmonic meta-atoms

Abstract: The generation in artificial composites of a magnetic response to light comparable in magnitude with the natural electric response, may offer an invaluable control parameter for a fine steering of light at the nanoscale. In many experimental realizations however, the magnetic response of artificial meta-atoms is too weak so that there is a need for new designs with increased magnetic polarizability. Numerical simulations show that geometrical plasmonic nanostructures based on the ideal model of Platonic solids… Show more

“…Lastly, we demonstrated that the solvent-induced self-assembly strategy could be extended to gold-coated clusters after slight optimisation of the experimental conditions. This opens avenues to new plasmonic building blocks with many potential applications in optics [43].…”

“…A colloidal suspension of silica (SiO 2 ) beads with diameter of 120 nm was used. In this size range, silica does not exhibit any Mie resonance, and, most importantly, its scattering cross‐section was simply calculated from the Mie theory [ 35,38,43 ] leftσθ=90,φ=0=||S1θ=902/q2=Nrefnormal/Nscat·(normalB/Bref)·(Trefλ /Tλ)·σrefθ=φ=90 leftσ//θ=φ=90=||S2θ=902/q2=Nrefnormal/Nscat·B///Bref·(Trefλ /T//λ)·σrefθ=φ=90 …”

“…We first synthesized a silica template with 12 dimples, according to a protocol described in details elsewhere. 1 The sample was characterized by TEM and we determined statistically that it consists of dodecahedral with a morphology yield of 70%. Other side products are silica particles with 8 dimples (6%), 9 dimples (7%), 10 dimples (7%) and mutisilica particles (10%).…”
