High Nighttime Ground-Level Ozone Concentrations in Kemaman: NO and NO2 Concentrations Attributions

Abstract: High nighttime ozone (O 3 ) concentration levels were observed in Kemaman, Terengganu, and results were compared with those in other places in Malaysia. In this study, the contribution of precursors [nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 )] and meteorological factors wind speed, and wind direction) toward long-term high nighttime O 3 over the period of 1999 to 2010 was evaluated. During this period, the recorded highest nighttime O 3 ground level was 89 ppb with more than 25% surpassing 20 ppb. Analysis… Show more

“…Wind speed and direction are significant agent that controlling ozone transport and dilution in both daytime and night time Kim and Guldmann, 2011;Toh et al, 2013). Awang et al (2015) reported that high O 3 concentrations in Kemaman were observed that coincided with prevailing winds from the southerly direction. Kuantan is one of the biggest cities in east coast Peninsular Malaysia and characterized by high population and traffic density, numbers of industrials and residential establishments.…”

“…However, the concentration of O3 during night-time was far lower than the daytime concentration due to the absence of photochemical reactions. This is because during night-time O3 concentration had lower concentration due to no titration and also the deposition [1]. For the correlation between ground level O3 concentration with others parameters, Pearson correlation was used in this study.…”

“…Tropospheric ozone (O3) is an important atmospheric constituent because it plays a main role as both an oxidant and a greenhouse gas [1,2]. Most of the O3 concentrations occupy in ozone layer; which is located in the middle of the stratosphere and acts as a protecting shield that protects Earth from any harmful radiation.…”

“…CCP is assumed to be the interception point between O 3 , NO 2 and NO line in the composite diurnal plot [10]. Generally, at the beginning of the plot, NO 2 concentration was high while O 3 concentration remained low due to NO x titration during nighttime [16]. Changes started to occur when entering CCT, starting around 8.00 a.m., due to the increasing solar radiation that triggers photochemical reactions.…”
