The aim of this study was to pharmacologically induce accommodative paralysis and evaluate its effects on the bioelectrical activity of the muscular system. The study included two participant groups: those with myopia and those with normal vision (emmetropes). Electromyographic assessments were performed using the Noraxon Ultium DTS 8-K MR 3 myo Muscle Master Edition system. The muscles analyzed in this study were the temporalis, masseter, sternocleidomastoid, trapezius, abdominal muscles, biceps brachii, and the external oblique muscles of the abdomen. It is important to acknowledge that, based on the current findings, it cannot be definitively stated that the observed effects have clinical significance, and additional studies are encouraged.

Purpose This study aimed to investigate the underlying factors driving the onset of myopia, specifically the role of the ciliary muscle’s contraction in the elongation of the axial length of the eye. Methods The retrospective study was conducted utilizing data from three ophthalmic centers in Shanghai and Beijing. Both Chinese and Caucasian children were involved. The axial length of the subjects’ eyes was measured in both relaxed and contracted state of the ciliary muscle. A comprehensive mechanical model was also developed to observe the influence of ciliary muscle contraction on the axial length. Results This study included a sample of 198 right eyes of 198 myopic children. Of these, 97 were male and 101 were female, 126 were of Chinese ethnicity and 72 were Caucasian. The age of onset for myopia ranged from 5.9 to 16.9 years old. The axial length of the eye decreased 0.028 ± 0.007mm following dilation, indicating relaxation of the ciliary muscle (t paired student = 15.16, p = 6.72 x 10−35). In contrast, ciliary muscle contraction resulted in an increase in axial length. Considering proportionality, a significant 90.4% (179 eyes) exhibited a reduced axial length, while a minor 9.6% (19 eyes) demonstrated an increase post-mydriasis. Finite element modeling demonstrated that muscle contraction caused a tension force that transmits towards the posterior pole of the eye, causing it to extend posteriorly. Conclusion The contraction of the ciliary muscle leads to an extension of the axial length. This could potentially be the initiating factor for myopia.

Objectives:The study deals with the identifying correlations between visual acuity and Class I vs Class II skeletal pattern. Methods: A total of seventy subjects were enrolled in the study with age ranging from 11-29 years. Using ANB angle, they were equally divided in two groups (Class I, Class II). Visual acuity of each subject were measured and correlated with each group. Descriptive statistics was compiled and comparison between the groups was made using t-test and Mann-Whitney U test followed by Pearson's correlation. Level of statistical significance was set at p≤0.05. Findings: The mean age difference between Class I and Class II samples was -0.74 and not statistically significant, indicating that the samples for both categories were of comparable ages. On comparison of visual acuity of right eye, there were 22.7% subjects with myopia in Class I compared to 77.3% in Class II, and this difference in proportion was statistically significant (ES=0.429). In left eye, 25.0% of Class I subjects had myopia, whereas 75.0 % in Class II, and this difference in proportion was also statistically significant (ES=0.328). Positive Pearson's correlation was found between ANB and Visual acuity of right eye (r=0.165). Novelty: This study concludes that Class II skeletal pattern subjects have more tendency to develop myopia. Further research involving other eye parameters are required to understand the cause-effect relationship.
