High Myopia and Thickness of Extraocular and Masticatory Muscles—7T MRI, Preliminary Study

Abstract: (1) Background: Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors in the world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the transverse dimensions of selected masticatory muscles (temporalis muscle and masseter muscle) versus the transverse dimensions of selected extraocular muscles (superior rectus, inferior rectus, medial rectus and lateral rectus) in emmetropic and high myopic subjects. (2) Methods: Twenty-seven individuals were included in the analysis, resulting in 24 eyeballs of patients with high myopia a… Show more

“…It is worth noting that a very recent study (2023) found a negative correlation between inferior rectus muscle thickness and visual acuity, which may support the above description of the relationships. Furthermore, the same study found correlations between the extraocular muscles and the masticatory muscles, which may support the fascial pathway [9]. Again, here we can consider the combination of two systems in which a change in one part of the whole link changes the other.…”

“…Changes in the SCM have already been seen in studies of people with myopia. Changes in the other muscle groups are likely to occur through the action of the musculo-fascial structures and their controlling nervous system [7,9].…”

“…Notably, this study did not examine the interrelationships between the eyeball and the extraocular muscles. Prior researches highlighted the significance of considering the functional entirety and the reciprocal impact of anatomical structures, such as the influence mediated by the Tenon’s capsule [ 35 ].…”

“…Fascial tissue has contractile components that modulate force transmission and generation (8) . The orbicularis oculi muscle, the levator palpebrae superioris, and finally the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) are all connected by the Tenon's capsule (9) . SMAS is further connected to epicranial aponeurosis and subsequently to the cervical ligament.…”
