High Lycopene Tomato Breeding Through Diallel Crossing

Abstract: Tomatoes are known as one of the natural source of antioxidant, which is a compound that can inhibit and reduce oxidative cell and biomolecule damages, such as lipid, protein, and DNA. Health benefits from lycopene made this compound a tomato breeding subject for increasing its nutrient content. Tomato breeding is an environment friendly and sustainable method in agriculture biofortification methods, hence making the efforts for increasing tomato lycopene content to be possible. The aim of this research was to… Show more

“…Lycopene (LP) is widely found in tomatoes and tomato products and is the main pigment in ripe tomatoes and one of the common carotenoids. 15 LP has a long-chain polyunsaturated olefin molecular structure, so it has an excellent ability to eliminate free radicals and has an excellent antioxidant capacity. 16 At present, studies on LP mainly focus on its antioxidant activity and its ability to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, reduce genetic damage, and inhibit the development of tumors.…”

“…Based on the parental genotypes, the cultivar Mawar showed good potential in forming the F 2 base populations. Furthermore, Bdr et al (2020) and Farid et al (2022) reported that the cultivar Mawar was the best parent in forming the hybrids. Therefore, these 75 lines can continue as families in the F 3 generation, especially the families generated from cultivar Mawar as one of the parents.…”
