High-Level Functional Capacity and 4-Year Mortality in an 80-Year-Old Population

Abstract: Background: Little is known about the relationship between high-level functional capacity and mortality in elderly people. Objective: To evaluate the relationship between high-level functional capacity, such as intellectual activity and social role, and 4-year mortality in a population of 80-year-old community residents. Methods: Participating in the study were 697 individuals (277 males and 420 females) out of 1,282 80-year-old individuals residing in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. To measure high-level functiona… Show more

“…We observed improvements in functional capacity, specifically for the 10 WM-test, across the groups, with large increases in the protein groups when compared with the placebo. Improvements in functional capacity are of important clinical relevance and reduce the risk of institutionalization and mortality [ 47 ]. It could be speculated that such improvements in functional capacity in the WP-PLA and PLA-WP are due to improvements in SMM (which influences muscle quality) and neuromuscular action [ 9 , 48 ], and also due to improvements in muscular strength [ 49 ].…”

“…Cognitive performance among older adults is prone to be affected by physical health status (Tombaugh and McIntyre, 1992), such as functional disability, hearing loss, and chronic disease, which are all closely related to mortality (Korten et al, 1999;Ostbye et al, 1999;Kattainen et al, 2004;Spiers et al, 2005;Takata et al, 2007;Lee et al, 2008). “…The third possible reason is physical health status. Cognitive performance among older adults is prone to be affected by physical health status (Tombaugh and McIntyre, 1992), such as functional disability, hearing loss, and chronic disease, which are all closely related to mortality (Korten et al, 1999;Ostbye et al, 1999;Kattainen et al, 2004;Spiers et al, 2005;Takata et al, 2007;Lee et al, 2008). Thus, individuals who exhibited a mild deficit in global cognition (MMSE scores of 24-27) may be likely to have poor physical health, and consequently, they may be more likely to have shorter lives as well.…”
