High‐latitude Hall and Pedersen conductances during substorm activity in the SUNDIAL‐ATLAS campaign

Abstract: Simultaneous high time resolution observations of the Hall and Pedersen conductances, ΣH and ΣP, respectively, the ionospheric electric field and the ground magnetic field during a magnetospheric substorm are reported. The measurements discussed here were taken during the SUNDIAL/ATLAS 1 campaign of March 24 to April 2, 1992. The European Incoherent Scatter (EISCAT) UHF special programme SP‐UK‐ATLAS, which operated on March 27, 1992, provided continuous measurements of the electron density and the ion vector v… Show more

“…In addition, a rough estimate of the Hall-toPedersen conductance ratio tz has to be given. Especially on the dayside, in the absence of highly energetic particle precipitation, such a rough estimate can be taken from statistical studies correlating tz to the general degree of magnetic activity [e.g., Schlegel, 1988' Lester et al, 1996. For the analysis the ground magnetic disturbance is continued to the ionosphere in order to calculate the ionospheric equivalent currents.…”

“…However, the e ect of this estimate on the ®nal results has been shown to be small in most cases (Amm, 1995). Moreover, the value of the conductance ratio can be assessed from the ground magnetic disturbance level (e.g., Lester et al, 1996). For the present event, the STARE radar did not provide su cient backscatter to apply a full 2D analysis.…”

“…Moreover, the number of assumptions needed is reduced compare to the`trial and error' method, for which both the Hall and Pedersen conductance have to be assumed independently. In contrast to the individual conductances, their ratio has been shown to be relatively stable and assessable from the level of ground magnetic activity (see Schlegel, 1988;Lester et al, 1996). In addition, Amm (1995) has shown the in¯uence of the estimate of that ratio on the ®nal results of the method of characteristics to be small.…”
