High Intensity High Volume Interval Training Improves Endurance Performance and Induces a Nearly Complete Slow-to-Fast Fiber Transformation on the mRNA Level

Abstract: We present here a longitudinal study determining the effects of two 3 week-periods of high intensity high volume interval training (HIHVT) (90 intervals of 6 s cycling at 250% maximum power, Pmax/24 s) on a cycle ergometer. HIHVT was evaluated by comparing performance tests before and after the entire training (baseline, BSL, and endpoint, END) and between the two training sets (intermediate, INT). The mRNA expression levels of myosin heavy chain (MHC) isoforms and markers of energy metabolism were analyzed in… Show more

“…S5D). These results are in line with previous work showing that HIIT increases the glycolytic capacity in gastrocnemius muscles (28) and induces a nearly complete slow-to-fast fiber type transformation (29). Accordingly, we also observed increased membrane staining for the insulin-sensitive glucose transporter GLUT4 in muscle sections of RUN but not EXO-RUN mice (Fig.…”

“…Exercise is known to affect fiber type composition, area, and expression (Campos et al, 2002 ; Taaffe & Marcus, 1997 ). Shifts in fiber type composition might not be achieved so easily in human interventions; however, changes in myosin heavy chain expression patterns might occur even after short interventions (Eigendorf et al, 2018 ). Thus, in our study, we have measured both parameters to see whether trainability is observed in either measurement.…”

“…HIIT can be further defined by volume. Although classically associated with weekly loads in athletes, volume has gained acceptance to define the total duration of HIIT interval lengths (Boyd et al, 2013; Scribbans et al, 2014; Ramos et al, 2017; Eigendorf et al, 2018; Reljic et al, 2018). High-volume High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) typically includes repeated intervals of near maximal aerobic efforts for a specific period (e.g., 4 × 4-minute intervals at 90% peak heart rate), with a rest/recovery period in between (e.g., 3 min at 65% peak heart rate).…”
