High improvement in trap level density and direct current breakdown strength of block polypropylene by doping with a β-nucleating agent

Abstract: Polypropylene is one kind of eco-friendly insulating material, which has attracted more attention for use in high voltage direct current (HVDC) insulation due to the long-distance transmission, low loss, and recyclability. In this work, the morphology and thermal and electrical properties of the block polypropylene with various β-nucleating agent (β-NA) contents were investigated. The relative fraction of the β-crystal can reach 64.7% after adding 0.05 wt. % β-NA. The β-NA also greatly reduced the melting poin… Show more

“…It was also found that the trap energies of neat PP, polypropylene/propylene-ethylene copolymer, and polypropylene/ethylene-octene copolymer samples were measured to be around 0.87 eV [19]. In addition, through conduction current measurement trap energy of neat block polypropylene was calculated to be around 0.92 eV [23]. The relaxation time constant τ 0 of relaxation process α changes with the loading, which is 5.79 × 10 −9 s at 0 wt %, 1.20 × 10 −8 s at 0.5 wt %, 7.10 × 10 −9 s at 1.0 wt %, and 6.20 × 10 −9 s at 2.0 wt %.…”

“…Experimental results measured by PEA method indicated that under high electric fields homo space charges can accumulate in the bulk of PP dielectric material [9,19,20,23]. The accumulation of space charges results in the distortion of electric field.…”

“…MPS-treated samples show higher AC breakdown strength than the C8 samples, and this can be related to the presence of b-crystal in MPS samples (Fig. 7) [43]. After 9-day water immersion, a significant (* 35 kV/mm) reduction in the AC breakdown of non-treated systems can be observed (Fig.…”

“…Therefore, it is necessary to develop new recyclable insulation materials for HVDC cable applications. Polypropylene (PP) which has high melting points and excellent electrical properties is a promising material for HVDC cables . However, its stiffness and brittleness at room temperature is not capable as cable insulation material.…”
