High-Frequency Quantitative Ultrasound Spectroscopy of Excised Canine Livers and Mouse Tumors Using the Structure Factor Model

Abstract: Three scattering models were examined for characterizing ex vivo canine livers and HT29 mouse tumors in the 10-38- and the 15-42-MHz frequency bandwidth, respectively. The spherical Gaussian model (SGM) and the fluid sphere model (FSM) that were examined are suitable for dealing with sparse media, whereas the structure factor model (SFM) is adapted for characterizing concentrated media. For the canine livers, the scatterer radius and the acoustic concentration estimated with the three models were similar and m… Show more

“…Figure 2 summarizes the ESD and EAC QUS parameters estimated from the SGM and SFM models. The ESD and EAC obtained from the sparse SGM and the concentrated SFM gave similar values for untreated liver at 37°C, as observed previously in previous experiments on ex vivo canine livers [5]. Whereas the ESD and EAC estimated by the sparse SGM and the concentrated SFM differ from each other for HIU treated samples.…”

“…For each ROI, estimates of QUS parameters were obtained by fitting the measured BSCmeas with the SGM [3][4] or the SFM [5][6] within the 12-38 MHz bandwidth. The SGM yields estimates of ESD and EAC.…”

“…It has addressed that the size of ROI is encouraged to over five times from the size of resolution cell in the envelope statistics, 3,31) and 10 times of the wavelength of the center frequency is usually required for high accuracy analysis of BSC. 11,15,38) However, envelope statistics and BSC analysis were also performed with ROI size ten times wavelength, and its result was the same as eight times. Therefore, the axial ROI size which was smaller one was employed in this study.…”
