High frequency focused imaging for ultrasonic probe integrity inspection

Abstract: Most ultrasonic probes present a layered structure that may comprise delay lines, acoustic lens, wear plates, matching layers, electrodes, piezoelectric layers, and a backing block. Probe integrity can be compromised by different defects, such as deficient bonding, presence of air bubbles or porosity, lack of electrical conductivity in electrodes, and deviations in the layers' acoustic thicknesses, impedances or attenuation values. Conventional testing procedures are based on the integral properties of the pro… Show more

“…The evaluation of the size of the sensitive area size can be performed using a focused transducer, scanning over the probe's surface [42], [43]. However, the focused probe's beam should be 50 μm diameter or smaller, in order to scan the 0.5 mm diameter area.…”

“…In this work, we present the development of the complete laser ultrasound source. Targeted applications are the synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT) [10], [65]- [68], photoacoustics [53]- [63] and the transducer spatial sensitivity evaluation and calibration [69]- [72]. The whole laser system is compact and lightweight.…”

“…Spatial distribution of the transduction efficiency over piezoelement surface could be a convenient means for the integrity inspection, allowing to locate local defects or damages as well as any sensitivity loss. Such technique was reported in [ 26 ]. It uses a focused beam scan over the inspected probe’s surface.…”
