High-Fidelity Router Emulation Technologies Based on Multi-Scale Virtualization

Abstract: Virtualization has the advantages of strong scalability and high fidelity in host node emulation. It can effectively meet the requirements of network emulation, including large scale, high fidelity, and flexible construction. However, for router emulation, virtual routers built with virtualization and routing software use Linux Traffic Control to emulate bandwidth, delay, and packet loss rates, which results in serious distortions in congestion scenarios. Motivated by this deficiency, we propose a novel router… Show more

“…Hong et al [10] used the NS3 tool to simulate a network for generating and capturing training datasets. Song and Wang [11] proposed LDDoS emulation technologies based on lightweight virtualization, which can construct an LDDoS emulation scenario with 400 routing nodes in a single physical server. Charlier et al [12] presented the novel framework SynGAN that generated adversarial network attacks using the Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) based on real attack traffic.…”

“…That is, the ZMW attack verification and analysis under large-scale network topology were hard to be completed. In order to fix above issue, [6] proposed an LDDoS emulation technology based on lightweight virtualization, instead of real testbed, to set up an LDDoS emulation scenario with 400 routing nodes. But this is just to alleviate the pressure of hardware equipment.…”

“…What is more, network emulation has been studied along with virtualization and attack emulation for replicating realistic scenarios and for security evaluation purposes [45]. Moreover, the benefits of virtualization and Dockers have also been considered by analyzing their capabilities for network virtualization [46,47]. The networking functionalities of containerization technology in the content of lightweight virtualization instances have been under research [30,48].…”
