High fecal carriage of blaCTX-M, blaCMY-2, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes among healthy Korean people in a metagenomic analysis

Abstract: To characterize the carriage of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the gut microbiome of healthy individuals. Fecal carriage of ARGs was investigated in 61 healthy individuals aged 30 to 59 years through whole metagenome sequencing of the gut microbiome and a targeted metagenomic approach. The number of ARGs in the gut microbiome was counted and normalized per million predicted genes (GPM). In the Korean population, the resistome ranged from 49.7 to 292.5 GPM (median 89.7). Based on the abundance of ARGs, t… Show more

“…The global dissemination of the bla CTX-M gene has been reported in hospital settings, communities, livestock, and companion animals (Jamborova et al, 2018). In addition, the bla CTX-M-27 containing isolates have also been widely reported in other Asian countries, including Japanese and Korean hospitals, suggesting regional transmission of these ESBL genes (Miyagi and Hirai, 2019;Kim et al, 2021).…”

“…Almost all of the CIP-resistant strains were also resistant to moxifloxacin, norfloxacin, and levofloxacin. This may be related to the fact that these antibiotics are commonly used to treat gastroenteritis in adults [ 22 ]. Furthermore, low-dose antibiotics are added to animal feed as growth promoters and, while providing economic benefits, this accelerates the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria [ 13 ].…”

“…A total of 114 metagenome samples were used: 53 from healthy infants and children (1–13 years) and 61 from healthy adults ( Figure 1 ). Sequencing data from healthy adults were obtained from our previous study ( Kim et al, 2021 ). Healthy adults aged 30–59 years, with a Charlson comorbidity score of zero, who visited health screening services from June–October 2017 were sampled for this study ( Kim et al, 2021 ).…”
