High expression of AKR1C1 is associated with proliferation and migration of small-cell lung cancer cells

Abstract: AKR1C1 is a member of the AKR1C family, which not only plays an important role in hormone metabolism but is believed to be involved in carcinogen metabolism. Our previous study demonstrated that AKR1C1 was highly expressed in lung tumor tissues as compared with the tumor-adjacent tissues. Small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a special type of lung cancer. Surgical treatment of SCLC is usually difficult due to the high degree of malignancy and early metastasis, and difficulty in obtaining clinical specimens. There … Show more

“…Results of RT-qPCR and western blot confirmed AKR1C1 mRNA and protein levels were lower following WA treatment. Tian et al ( 24 ) demonstrated that high expression of AKR1C1 gene was associated with progression and poor prognosis of lung cancer. AKR1C1 is associated with numerous important biological processes, including the oxidation reduction and carcinogenesis of a number of vertebrate species ( 25 ).…”

“…The traditional cancer prognosis pathway related UDP‐glucuronosyl transferase (UGT) 2B enzymes are important in the detoxification of a variety of endogenous and exogenous compounds, including many hormones, drugs, and carcinogens 58 . It has been reported that active function of AKR1C1 as a key component of the STAT3 pathway may promote lung cancer metastasis 59,60 . MGST2, the member of MGST family, primarily metabolizes foreign chemicals, such as drugs and environmental pollutants, and also plays roles in the detoxification of reactive compounds 61 .…”

“…S1D). There are many well-documented pro-oncogenic genes (Kojima et al, 2019;Tian et al, 2016;Wu et al, 2019) that are upregulated upon the expression of EN2, implying that EN2 could modulate the expression of the downstream targets genes in a cellular, context-dependent manner. The upregulated oncogenic gene was investigated for its role in mediating the biological function of EN2 using SPARC in the Eca109 cell line.…”
