High efficiency radiation accumulator for powerful lasers with low beam quality

Abstract: Experimental studies of the concept of an efficient radiation trap based on the adiabatic photon confinement between curved mirrors is presented in the paper. Such a trap is free from restrictions typical to the Fabry-Perot cells, relating to the confined radiation quality, accuracy and stabilization of optical elements. Experiments have demonstrated the high efficiency of confinement, which mainly depends on the reflectivity of mirrors and their surface defects.

“…In the present paper, we consider different configuration with a special shape of the mirrors that can confine photons for longer period of time. Reflections of photons from these mirrors is accompanied by their propagation along the mirror, so some adiabatic invariants of their motion remain unchanged [6,7]. Conservation of these adiabatic invariants are forcing the photons to stay in a limited volume despite presence of open areas on the mirror surface (see appendix).…”

“…A mathematical model of the proposed configuration of the non-resonance adiabatic photon trap has been briefly considered in [6], along with an experimental proof of adiabatic photon confinement in a simple system of spherical mirrors. More details of numerical simulation of the photon accumulation in such a photon trap can be found in [7]. The trap described in [7] is shaped as a long arch with tapered ends, which is more convenient for beam neutralization (see figure 1).…”
