The present study investigated the effect of different culture conditions on the vegetative growth of a new species, Haematococcus alpinus (strain LCR‐CC‐261f) using airlift photobioreactors. The influence of culture medium, aeration rates, CO2 concentration in air‐gas mixture, temperature, light intensities, and wavelengths were investigated to achieve sustainable high cell density cultures. Growth parameters were determined by fitting the data to a form of the logistic equation that included a lag phase. The shear‐sensitive vegetative cells favored lower aeration rates in the photobioreactors. MLA medium increased to 40 mM nitrate produced high density cultures. Temperatures between 12°C and 18°C, 3% (v/v) CO2 concentration and a narrow photon flux density ranging between 37 and 48 μmol photons · m−2 · s−1 were best suited for growth. The wavelength of the light source also impacted growth and a high cell density of 9.6 × 105 cells · mL−1 was achieved using a mixture of red and blue compared to warm white, red, or blue LEDs.

Microalgae have been used as energy resources in recent decades to mitigate the global energy crisis. As the demand for pure microalgae strains for commercial use increases, designing an effective photobioreactor (PBR) for mass cultivation is important. Chlorella vulgaris, a local freshwater microalga, was used to study the algal biomass cultivation and lipid production using various PBR configurations (bubbling, air-lift, porous air-lift). The results show that a bubbling column design is a better choice for the cultivation of Chlorella vulgaris than an air-lift one. The highest biomass concentration in the bubbling PBR was 0.78 g/L while the air-lift PBR had a value of 0.09 g/L. Key operating parameters, including draft-tube length and bubbling flowrate, were then optimized based on biomass production and lipid yield. The highest lipid content was in the porous air-lift PBR and the air-lift PBR with shorter draft tube (35 cm) was also better than a longer one (50 cm) for algal cultivation, but the microalgae attachment on the inner tube of PBR always occurred. The highest biomass concentration could be produced under the highest gas flowrate of 2.7 L/min, whereas the lowest dry cell mass was under the lowest gas flowrate of 0.2 L/min.

Evaluación de las condiciones de crecimiento celular para la producción de astaxantina a patir de la microalga Haematococcus pluvialis Evaluation of Cell Growth Conditions for the Astaxanthin Production as of Haematococcus pluvialis Microalgae ResumenEn la actualidad la astaxantina de origen natural es uno de los pigmentos carotenoides con importantes aplicaciones en la industria alimenticia, farmacéutica y cosmética, debido a sus grandes propiedades dentro de las que se destaca su gran poder antioxidante, efecto preventivo del cáncer, incremento de la respuesta inmune, inhibición de los radicales libres entre muchas otras. Haematococcus pluvialis es una microalga verde de agua dulce y es una de las fuentes naturales con mayor producción de astaxantina ya que es capaz de acumular hasta un 3% de astaxantina en peso seco. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue determinar el medio de cultivo y las condiciones óptimas para el crecimiento y la producción de astaxantina a partir de Haematococcus pluvialis. La influencia de diferentes factores como el pH, temperatura, agitación, aireación CO 2 e iluminación favorecen el crecimiento celular, al darle un ambiente óptimo a la microalga.Para determinar las condiciones nutricionales óptimas, se evaluó el efecto de diferentes medios de cultivo (BBM, OHM, RM) en Birreactores de 500mL con 350mL de medio y 1x10 4 cel/ml de inóculo en fase exponencial, las condiciones de cultivo empleadas fueron: pH. 6.7 a 7, CO 2 al 5%, fotoperiodo de 16 horas luz 8 oscuridad, irradianza 70μE/m 2 s; Los resultados mostraron que el mayor crecimiento o producción celular se obtuvo en el medio RM con 7,5 x 10 5 cel/ml en el día 36, y la mayor producción de astaxantina se obtuvo en el medio RM con una concentración de 8.3 μg/ml en el tratamiento 4.
