High efficiency DC-DC converter with twin-bus for dimmable LED lighting

Abstract: A novel twin-bus converter using n + 1 active switches is proposed for the n-string LEDs to be dimmable from true zero to the rated current level. With the proposed twin-bus structure, the n-switches that perform the current-loop regulation can operate at very high frequency because of significantly reduced voltage stresses, while achieving high efficiency over a wide load range. With operating frequency exceeding 1 MHz in the test case, the proposed LED driver demonstrates ultra compact size inductor and fast… Show more

“…Electronic based office and home appliances, such as computers, laptops, tablets, phones, printers, TVs [2], microwave ovens [3] and lighting, consume electricity in DC form [4][5][6][7]. Newer more-efficient lighting technologies such as compact fluorescent fixtures and solid-state lighting involve a DC stage and hence it is more efficient to utilize them in a DC distribution system [8,9]. DC power is used in Variable Speed Drives (VSD) for pumps, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems, fans, elevators, mills and traction systems.…”

“…The multiple-stage approach gives more speed and flexibility to control the output luminosity [38], [44]. This is necessary when bilevel [14] or even pulsewidth modulation (PWM) techniques are to be employed for the LED light modulation [41], [44]- [46]. A switching converter could be employed to control each branch of LEDs.…”

“…A switching converter could be employed to control each branch of LEDs. A concept known as twin-bus takes advantage of the knee voltage of the LED [38], [46] to increase the efficiency of conversion by reducing the voltage stress on the semiconductors, thus enabling a full-dimming …”

“…For modern applications, the reduction of external components in stand-alone ac-dc LED lamps is favored [7]- [10]. For higher individuality, distributed intelligent dc-dc LED driver modules are gathered around a central ac-dc converter [11], [12].…”

“…Hence, another driver solution has to be found. Figure 1(b) shows an enhancement of the single-output LED driver to fix the mentioned drawbacks [11], [15]- [19]. Now, each LED string is supplied by its own output.…”
