High dose rate and low dose rate ruthenium brachytherapy for uveal melanoma. No association with ocular outcome

Abstract: Although dose rates ranged widely, there was no apparent association with secondary enucleation, suggesting that based on ocular survival, current practice of annual replacement of applicators is acceptable, irrespective of the significant reduction in each applicator's dose rate. Nevertheless, patients treated with higher dose rates have shorter plaque exposure and presumably less ocular irritation.

“…In our series, patients receiving a tumour apex dose of <90 Gy were also more likely to encounter tumour recurrence, yet the difference was not quite significant (p=0.06). Other authors did not find any association between apex dose and tumour recurrence or secondary enucleation; however, dose rate might also play a role in this context 10 24. The use of combined brachytherapy and TTT for the treatment of melanomas >6 mm has also been described to increase tumour control, and TTT has also been used to reduce radiation dose in case of small tumours or in case of uncertain tumour regression after treatment 12.…”

“…Fili et al 5 examined the influence on ruthenium-106 brachytherapy dose rate on the ocular outcome in 962 patients in Sweden between 1979 and 2012. Although dose rates ranged widely, they observed no association with the the frequency of secondary enucleation ( see ).…”
