High-Dose Chemotherapy with Bone Marrow Rescue for High-Grade Gliomas in Adults

Abstract: High-grade malignant gliomas are inevitably fatal, despite every effort to improve this prognosis, including various radiotherapeutic modalities, radio- and chemotherapeutic associations, and combinations of several drugs. High-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone-marrow transplantation (ABMT) have been increasingly used in the last 10 years for solid tumors, and several phase II studies in high-grade glioma patients have been conducted in the setting of both adjuvant treatment and recurrent disease. The most… Show more

“…This may account for the observed immunolocalisation in the cytoplasm. A second band at 65 kDa, only present in Lan 2 cells, may also be due to alternative splicing, as it is known that several species-and tissue-specific splice variants of LRP8 do exist (42)(43)(44).…”

“…[2][3][4][5][6][7]20 These results mirror those observed with other high-dose regimens 28 -30 and contrast with results observed with carmustine-containing regimens, for which treatment-related toxicity and mortality were observed. [31][32][33] However, much of this survival advantage may be attributed to the young age of the study population (mean age, 38 years vs. 56 years for all patients with GBM 34 ). Superior survivals occur among younger patients with these tumors, an effect that most likely is related to tumor biology and host factors.…”

“…Anche il ricorso ad un trattamento radioterapico intraoperatorio con elettroni (15)(16)(17)(18)(19)(20) Gy in singola dose) ha ottenuto risultati incoraggianti, ma I'alto costa delle attrezzature necessarie limita la diffusione di questa metodica. * * * La dr.ssa Brandes (Padova) ha discusso I'importanza della chemioterapia nei gliomi ad alto grado.…”
