High Degree of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms in California Culex pipiens (Diptera: Culicidae) sensu lato

Abstract: Resolution of systematic relationships among members of the Culex pipiens (L.) complex has important implications for public health as well as for studies on the evolution of sibling species. Currently held views contend that in California considerable genetic introgression occurs between Cx. pipiens and Cx. quinquefasciatus Say, and as such, these taxa behave as if they are a single species. Development of high throughput SNP genotyping tools for the analysis of Cx. pipiens complex population structure is the… Show more

“…43 Autogenous populations of Cx. pipiens recently were detected in catch basins and manholes in the Sacramento Valley of California, 44 Marin County, 45 and Santa Clara County, 42 supporting the unpublished studies of Iltis (Iltis WG, unpublished dissertation) who reported widespread autogeny among pipiens populations throughout much of central California.…”

“…These differences are not surprising given that Cx. quinquefasciatus and related Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes have very high densities of SNPs, in fact more than any other mosquito thus far studied (Lee et al, 2012). …”

“…Cx. quinquefasciatus and related Culex pipiens complex mosquitoes have a very high densities of SNPs, in fact more than any other mosquito thus far studied (Lee et al, 2012). It is worth mentioning that the genome was sequenced from the Johannesburg strain (Arensburger et al, 2010), whereas we cloned the genes (Hughes et al, 2010; Pelletier et al, 2010) using cDNA template from a California strain.…”
