High correlation of babA 2 -positive strains of Helicobacter pylori with the presence of gastric cancer

Abstract: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that is well known in the involvement of chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa of the human stomach. Several studies have investigated the possible role of H. pylori presence in different gastroduodenal disorders with conflicting results. This study aimed to further investigate such a field. Helicobacter pylori strains were cultured from 160 patients (mean age of 42 years; range 15-75; 90 were male, and 70 were female) [40 gastric cancer (GC), 5… Show more

“…In the present study, the considerable frequency of the more virulent allele iceA1 in H. pylori isolates suggests that the predominant allelic form of iceA in Pakistan, like East Asia, is iceA1 . The frequency of babA -positive H. pylori isolates in the current investigation was also similar to recent studies from South Asia (31.4%, India and 40.6%, Iran) [46,54], but lower than reports published from East Asia [5557]. In the present study, the dupA gene was highly prevalent in clinical H. pylori isolates, and this frequency was higher than in other reports from South and East Asian countries [5860].…”

“…These pathogenicity genes were therefore frequently found in these Pakistani H. pylori clinical isolates in accordance with previous studies from South and East Asia [46,5457, 64]. However, the presence of these pathogenicity genes was not significantly associated with the severity of disease.…”

“…Раз-личают две аллельные формы этого гена -iceA1 и iceA2. Известно, что iceA1 чаще ас-социирован с язвенной болезнью, iceA2 -с развитием хронического гастрита [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Эти показатели оказались ниже, чем у взрослых, среди которых iceA1 встречался в 55,2% случаев (32 пациента), что в значительной мере согласуется с по-лученными ранее в нашем регионе резуль-татами [20], а также с литературными дан-ными [7][8][9][10].…”

“…Although three bab alleles have been identified (babA1, babA2, and babB), only the babA2 gene product is functional for Leb binding activity (16). Some studies discovered a significant relation between babA2 positive genotypes and the occurrence of peptic ulcer diseases (12), while others failed to find these relationships (17,18).…”
