Up-to-date fibre lasers produce multi-kw radiation with an excellent beam quality. Compared to CO 2 -lasers, fibre lasers have relatively low operational costs and offer a very high flexibility in production due to the beam delivery with process fibres. As a consequence, fibre lasers have attracted more and more attention. On the other hand, their use in industrial applications especially in the automotive industry is still limited to a certain extent and fibre lasers haven't replaced all other laser sources till now as it could be expected.In laser cutting, the small kerf width produced by fibre lasers should be advantageous since the heated volume is smaller compared to CO 2 -lasers. In fact, cutting velocities are usually much higher which is also caused by the higher absorption coefficient of most metals at the wavelength emitted by fibre lasers. Nevertheless, cutting with fibre lasers of some metals -e.g. stainless steels -is restricted to a small thicknesses of approx. 5mm. The reason for this is that the surface roughness of the edges increases dramatically with the thickness of the work piece.Applications of fibre lasers include e.g. remote welding or even remote cutting of a large variety of materials with usually excellent results. Due to the excellent beam quality the aspect ratio of the weld seam in relation to the penetration depth is quite good. In the case of thin sheet metal welding such a small beam waist is beneficial -but with thicker sheet metals it is very often disadvantageous since the preparation of samples is more complicated, costs increase and requirements on clamping devices rise.In this paper, advantages and disadvantages of fibre lasers are discussed briefly. Applications of a 1.5 kW fibre laser are presented and compared to classical laser systems.

“…Experimental data on cutting of various metals mainly with nitrogen used as a process gas are available (a detailed review can be found in [1]). It is known that solid-state lasers ensure a greater velocity of cutting of thin sheets than CO 2 lasers with the same power in the case of cutting with an inert process gas; for instance, for a sheet thickness of 1-2 mm, the difference in the cutting velocity is expressed by a factor of 3-4 [2,3]. The difference in the optimal cutting velocities is less significant in the case of cutting of 4-mm sheets and almost vanishes in the case of cutting of 10-mm sheets; moreover, a CO 2 laser ensures a better quality of the cut edge.…”

The quality of cutting of low-carbon and stainless steel by beams of fiber and CO 2 lasers with oxygen or nitrogen being used as a process gas is compared. The cut surface roughness for sheets from 3 to 10 mm thick is determined. Domains of optimal (in terms of the minimum roughness criterion) application of lasers of various types in the space of dimensionless parameters (Peclet number and dimensionless power) are found. It is demonstrated that the CO 2 laser is more effective for laser-oxygen cutting, while the fiber laser is more beneficial for cutting with the use of a neutral gas.

The laser cutting of the low-carbon and stainless steel with fiber and CO 2 lasers was compared by a similar technique. The dependence of the cut surface roughness on cutting parameters was analyzed for stainless steel sheets of 3 and 5 mm and mild steel sheets of 5, 10, 16 mm. The speed at which the roughness is minimal was found. For the cutting of stainless steel with nitrogen, the minimal achieved roughness is approximately similar for two types of lasers, whereas the speed correlating with the minimal roughness was higher in the fiber-laser case. When cutting the mild steel with oxygen, the СО 2 laser enables to reach lower roughness at higher cutting speed. For the oxygen-assisted laser cutting, the empirical relations were found which connect the cutting speed and laser power associated with the minimal roughness, with the cut sheet thickness, for the cutting processes by the fiber and СО 2 -laser.
