High 11C-Methionine Uptake in a Parasellar Inflammatory Pseudotumor

Abstract: A 20-year-old man had left visual impairment and homonymous hemianopsia. MRI findings suggested enlargement of an optic glioma, because optic glioma was indicated by MRI 14 years earlier without a definite pathological diagnosis. 11 C-methionine (MET) PET showed high uptake in the tumor in the parasellar region. Transnasal endoscopic biopsy was performed, and an inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) was diagnosed based on histopathological findings. High MET uptake in a parasellar IPT has apparently not been previous… Show more

“…4 Previously, there have been reports on the imaging of inflammatory pseudotumors using 18 F-FDG, 18 F-FCH, and 11 C-MET PET/CT. [5][6][7][8] In this case, we found that pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumors exhibited intense FAPI uptake. This may be related to the formation of granulomas and the activation of fibroblast activation protein within the inflammatory pseudotumor lesions.…”

“…Clinical symptoms and imaging characteristics are often atypical 4 . Previously, there have been reports on the imaging of inflammatory pseudotumors using 18 F-FDG, 18 F-FCH, and 11 C-MET PET/CT 5–8 . In this case, we found that pulmonary inflammatory pseudotumors exhibited intense FAPI uptake.…”

“…The uptake of the essential amino acid methionine is necessary for protein synthesis and is increased in tissues with increased cellular proliferation 9 . 11 C-methionine–avid malignant tumors of various origin have been described 10–13 and furthermore in benign lesions such as inflammatory pseudotumor, 14 meningioma, multiple sclerosis, encephalitis, infarction, 15 hyperostosis, hematoma, cerebral infection, and hamartoma 10 . 11 C-methionine uptake has also been suggested as a marker of bone infection 16 …”
