HIF 1 ɑ – a promising target for the treatment of meningiomas

Abstract: Background. Meningiomas are the most frequent tumors of the brain and spinal cord with a potency to recur in around one third of the cases and and invade surrounding tissue. Hypoxia driven factors like HIFs (Hypoxia inducible factors) are implicated in tumor cell growth and proliferation. Aim. This study aims at determining the association of HIF 1 ɑ with different histopathological grades and types of meningiomas. Methods. This prospective study was conducted on 35 patients. The patients presented… Show more

“…This binding activates the transcription of genes that help cells adapt to low oxygen conditions, including those involved in angiogenesis, glucose metabolism, and apoptosis. In addition to its role in hypoxia, HIF-1α also plays a critical role in cancer progression by promoting tumorigenicity and angiogenesis [ 18 ]. Interestingly, HIF-1α protein is almost undetectable in normal cells under normoxic conditions, whereas it is highly activated in many tumors.…”

“…During hypoxia, HIF-1α moves into the nucleus and helps the cell adjust its metabolism to the new conditions by linking to DNA [ 19 ]. In normal cells, HIF-1α is present in small amounts, but it is highly activated in many tumors [ 20 ]. Our research discovered that HIF-1α expression increased significantly in ESC cells but was downregulated after echinacoside treatment.…”
