Hierarchically Porous Carbon Materials from Self-Assembled Block Copolymer/Dopamine Mixtures

Abstract: Hierarchically porous carbon materials with interconnected frameworks of macro- and mesopores are desirable for electrochemical applications in biosensors, electrocatalysis, and supercapacitors. In this study, we report a facile synthetic route to fabricate hierarchically porous carbon materials by controlled macro- and mesophase separation of a mixture of polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene) and dopamine. The morphology of mesopores is tailored by controlling the coassembly of PS-b-PEO and dopamine in the acidic… Show more

“…Although DA can bind with PEO chains through hydrogen bonds of catechol and amine groups in DA with ether groups in PEO, 4 the oxidation and polymerization of DA could disturb the binding of DA with PEO chains. 18 Thus, the ability of PS-b-PEO templating may not be valid for oxidized and polymerized DA. The purpose of extra HCl addition is to avoid oxidative polymerization of dopamine, to enhance binding of DA with the PEO, and to weaken inter-DA interactions.…”

“…Looking forward, our strategy can be extended to other 1–3D objects such as cubes, polyhedra, nanowires, membranes, and so forth. The extended applications are also key points for us to explore directional gas/substance release for nano-/micromotor applications. , …”

“…Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) block copolymers (PS- b -PEO BCPs) have attracted broad interest since their self-assembled nanodomains can be used as templates to make inorganic or carbon nanomaterials. The nanomaterials based on BCP-templating have well-defined morphologies and finely tailored domain sizes. The fabrication of nanostructure materials needs a sol–gel process for solutions that contain PS- b -PEO in binary cosolvents in the presence of additives (such as bases, acids, and homopolymers). …”
