Hierarchical structure and general factor saturation of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index: Evidence and implications.

Abstract: The Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) is one of the most widely used measures of the construct of anxiety sensitivity. Until the recent introduction of a hierarchical model of the ASI by S. Lilienfeld, Turner, and Jacob (1993), the factor structure of the ASI was the subject of debate, with some researchers advocating a unidimensional structure and others proposing multidimensional structures. In the present study, involving 432 outpatients seeking treatment at an anxiety disorders clinic and 32 participants with… Show more

“…The ASI has three lowerorder factors that all load on a single higher-order factor across diverse populations (Zinbarg et al, 1997). The lower-order factors represent Physical, Psychological, and Social Concerns, and the higher-order factor represents the Global AS construct.…”

“…The ASI is a widely-used measure that has shown good psychometric properties among both clinical and nonclinical populations (Reiss, Peterson, Gursky, & McNally, 1986;Telch, Shermis, & Lucas, 1989). Support has been found for a 3-factor structure: Physical Concerns, Mental Incapacitation Concerns, and Social Concerns, all of which load onto a higher-order anxiety sensitivity construct (Zinbarg, Barlow, & Brown, 1997). Beck, Epstein, Brown, & Steer, 1988).…”

“…The Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI) is a 16-item questionnaire in which respondents indicate on a 5-point Likert-type scale (0 = very little to 4 = very much) the degree to which they fear the negative consequences of anxiety symptoms ( Reiss, Peterson, Gursky, & McNally, 1986 ). Factor analysis of this scale indicates that it has a hierarchical structure, with three fi rst-order factors titled anxiety sensitivity -physical concerns, mental incapacitation concerns, and social concerns and a single, higher order general factor ( Zinbarg, Barlow, & Brown, 1997 ). The ASI has demonstrated good internal consistency and good psychometric properties ( Peterson & Reiss, 1992 ).…”
