We study the sequential energy detection problem in the context of spectrum sensing for cognitive radio networks. We formulate a novel Sequential Energy Detector and provide a comprehensive study of its performance. The sensitivity of the Sequential Test to primary signal variance estimation is addressed for the first time ever in this paper. Specifically, we develop an Iterative Hybrid Bayesian method to robustly estimate the primary signal variance. Through extensive simulations it is demonstrated that our Sequential version of the energy detector delivers a significant throughput improvement of 2 to 6 times over the fixed sample size test while maintaining equivalent operating characteristics as measured by the Probabilities of Detection and False Alarm. Our simulations also demonstrate the enhanced robustness gained via the use of the new Variance Estimator which converges in only 10 iterations on average and delivers a performance within 10% of that with perfect knowledge of the actual primary signal variance.

Detection of transmission opportunities is the critical part of establishing a cognitive radio network. Traditionally, it is achieved via spectrum sensing carried out at the physical layer to detect unused frequency bands. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to detect transmission opportunities at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer based on the concept of interference temperature. In this approach, secondary transmissions are overlayed on top of primary transmissions as long as they do not affect the primary transmission. A Transmit Margin is defined and used to quantify the spare capacity in the primary network. We setup a system to estimate and track the Packet Error Rates (PER) and use it as a metric for transmit opportunity detection. A distributed estimation procedure to increase the robustness of the estimate is also proposed for cognitive radio networks. The scope of this hitherto unexplored area of cognitive radios is demonstrated and applied to IEEE 802.11 wireless networks through simulation studies.

Sequential sensing algorithms are developed for OFDM-based hierarchical cognitive radio (CR) systems. Secondary users sense multiple sub-bands simultaneously for possible spectrum availabilities under hard miss-detection constraints to prevent interference to the primary users. Accounting for the fact that the sensing time overhead can often be significant, a performance metric is developed based on the effective achievable data rate. An optimization problem is formulated in the framework of optimal stopping problems to maximize the average effective data rate by determining the best time to stop taking samples for sensing, as well as the best set of channels to use for data transmission. A basis expansion-based sub-optimal algorithm is derived to reduce the prohibitive complexity of the optimal solution.
