Hierarchical Codebook Design for Beamforming Training in Millimeter-Wave Communication

Abstract: Abstract-In millimeter-wave communication, large antenna arrays are required to achieve high power gain by steering towards each other with narrow beams, which poses the problem to efficiently search the best beam direction in the angle domain at both Tx and Rx sides. As the exhaustive search is time consuming, hierarchical search has been widely accepted to reduce the complexity, and its performance is highly dependent on the codebook design. In this paper, we propose two basic criteria for the hierarchical c… Show more

“…Next, they proceed with an exhaustive search mechanism using the K beamformers to select the beam-pair yielding the maximum SNR. Following, they iterate partitioning and search procedures until the narrowest beams are used of an hierarchical codebook are used [7]. It is easy to verify that the total training time (scanning and feedback) for hierarchical strategy is…”

“…These architectures are called hybrid analog/digital architectures and have been addressed in [15,16]. Precoding and/or combining/equalization designs for single-user systems have been addressed for fully connected hybrid architectures in [17][18][19]. In these architectures, each of the RF chains is connected to all receive-and-transmit antennas.…”
