Abstract-Model-driven and component-oriented development is increasingly being used in the development of embedded systems. When combined, both paradigms provide several advantages, such as higher reuse rates, and improved system quality. Performing model-driven and component-oriented development should be accompanied by a component model and a method that prescribes how the component model is used. This article provides an overview on the MARMOT method, which consists of an abstract component model and a methodology for the development of embedded systems. The paper describes a feasibility study that demonstrates MARMOT's capability to alleviate system design, verification, implementation, and reuse. Results indicate that model-driven and component-based development following the MARMOT method outperforms Agile development for embedded systems, leads to maintainable systems, and higher than normal reuse rates.

Abstract-Model-based and component-oriented software development approaches are slowly superseding traditional ways of developing embedded systems. For investigating to which extent model-based development is feasible for embedded system development, we conducted a case study in which a small embedded system is developed using the MARMOT approach. In order to evaluate the degree of reuse that might be achieved, the components of the case study are used in the context of different small projects. Several aspects of reuse, application size, ease of adaptation, and development effort are quantified. This analysis reveals that model-based and component-oriented development performs well for small embedded systems, and it leads to the conclusion that model-driven/component-based development of embedded systems enables adaptable applications with higherthan-normal reuse rate.

As real-time systems become more prevalent, there is a need to guarantee that these increasingly complex systems perform as designed. One technique involves a static analysis to place an upper bound on worst-case execution time (WCET). Other techniques aim for new architectures and algorithms that reduce the WCET. At the same time, there is a growing interest in using Java for real-time systems. Several WCET analysis prototypes for Java have been created, and more are under development.This paper provides a comprehensive survey of research that combines WCET analysis with the Java domain. We begin by explaining the importance of WCET analysis and why it is so difficult to perform adequately. We then examine the features that make Java an attractive platform for WCET analysis, as well as the new challenges it brings. Finally, we provide a survey of prior work on this subject, organized as a simple one-level taxonomy.
