Hiding the Cosmological Constant

Abstract: Perhaps standard effective field theory arguments are right, and vacuum fluctuations really do generate a huge cosmological constant. I show that if one does not assume homogeneity and an arrow of time at the Planck scale, a very large class of general relativistic initial data exhibit expansions, shears, and curvatures that are enormous at small scales, but quickly average to zero macroscopically. Subsequent evolution is more complex, but I argue that quantum fluctuations may preserve these properties. The re… Show more

“…With such a review the experimental efforts dedicated to CRE could be prioritized accordingly so that appropriate detection and monitoring algorithms could be developed, including the alerting mechanisms on a sub-threshold level to be analyzed in accordance with the multi-messenger astrophysics strategies. The latter direction gives promising perspectives for new advances in astrophysics, reflected also in the new attention of theorists, also those addressing the questions related to space time structure (see e.g., [146][147][148]) and private interest in discussions (P. Homola's private communication with S. Carlip, Y. J. Ng, and Q. Wang.…”

“…This explains why to date we have seen no manifestation of the huge values that k ∝ k 4 can reach and that play a central role in the traditional discussions of the cosmological constant. [see [26] for further details, and [62] for a purely classical discussion of "hiding" the cosmological constant at small distances].…”

“…Actually, there have been many different attempts to find a solution to this very hard problem. I just quote here, to finish, the most recent, brand new approaches, of the last couple of years, at solving the cc problem, by Unruh, Leonhardt, Carlip, Santos, and others [177][178][179][180][181].…”
