Hibiscus sabdariffa anthocyanins-rich extract: Chemical stability, in vitro antioxidant and antiproliferative activities

Abstract: Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx is a rich source of anthocyanins and other bioactive compounds but no study reported the effects of experimental conditions on the extraction of these chemical compounds. Therefore, the effects of time and extraction temperature on the bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity of Hibiscus sabdariffa calyx were evaluated. In addition, the effects of copigmentation and pH on the stability of anthocyanins were assessed and the cytotoxic effects (LC, IC, and GC) of the extracts were de… Show more

“…This value is close to that observed by Maciel et al. () for H. sabdariffa L. calyx extract (89.6 kJ/mol). High activation energy values suggest that the compounds present in an extract have good temperature stability; the higher the activation energy, the slower the anthocyanin degradation reaction (Atkins & Jones, ).…”

“…Our thermal stability results for red chicory extract were similar to those found by Maciel et al. () for Hibiscus sabdariffa L. extract. The half‐life was 41.2 hr at 60 °C and 1.5 hr at 100 °C; the rate constants at these temperatures were 2.83 × 10 −4 and 7.52 × 10 −3 min −1 , respectively.…”

“…Tal fator pode ser explicado devido ao poder extrator do solvente etanólico ter possibilitado a extração de uma maior quantidade de compostos bioativos. Além disso, a literatura cita que os valores da atividade antioxidante em extratos de H. sabdariffa variam de acordo com a origem geográfica da planta(ZHEN et al, 2016), processos de adubação(RAMOS et al, 2011) e métodos de extração(MACIEL et al, 2018). Logo, não podemos descartar a ação destes fatores abióticos na composição do extrato.…”
