HFS-14, a Specific Quality of Life Scale Developed for Patients Suffering from Hand–Foot Syndrome

Abstract: Background. Hand-foot syndrome (HFS) is a common reaction to certain chemotherapies and new targeted therapies, impairing patient quality of life (QoL). However, there is currently no specific tool to measure QoL in patients with HFS.Objective. The objective was to develop and validate a HFS-specific QoL questionnaire (HFS-14).

“…This would allow early modification of cancer treatment and initiation of symptomatic therapy to avoid further treatment modification. 9 Even after 30 years of reports related to this adverse event, scarce information points to an effective treatment or prevention. “…The original version of the HFS-14 targeted patients who had already developed HFS (23). We made a small change to the original HFS-14 with permission from the original author to detect the development and progression of HFS (24); the limb involvement question was changed to add a score of 0 (no HFS symptoms) to the options, and we added a brief explanation of HFS to the introductory portion of the questionnaire.…”
