HF passive bistatic radar based on DRM illuminators

Abstract: Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM)-based HF passive bistatic radar has massive potential for surveillance purposes. Progress about DRM based passive bistatic radar is described.Several key problems need to be overcome for the base-band signal processing, including the vice-peaks suppression of DRM signal ambiguity function, the rejection of direct-path and multipath clutter in the surveillance channel and the extraction of the reference signal in the reference channel. Relative solutions of these problems will be pr… Show more

“…A method of polarization notching of the direct penetrating signals was proposed in [17]. The method is based on the fact that depolarization occurs when the signal is reflected from the AO and cross-polarization components appear.…”

“…Before the 2D-CCF, the reference signal has to be preprocessed by pilots equalization and blanking CPs to remove pilot peaks and guard interval peak respectively [25]. The modified ambiguity function for DRM signal in mode B is shown as Fig.7 (c).…”

“…China has begun the medium wave DRM broadcasting; meanwhile, the development of short wave DRM broadcast is relatively slow, still staying in the beginning stage. But many DRM transmitters in Europe broadcast toward China [23]; thanks to the short wave DRM broadcast transmitted from abroad and reflected by the ionosphere, HFPBR can be put into practice in China and preliminary investigation has been started [24]- [25]. In this paper, we report the first experimental development of DRM-based hybrid sky-surface wave HFPBR in China, using the newly-developed all-digital active/passive integrated HF surface wave radar system of Wuhan University.…”

“…However, relatively recently, there have been efforts dedicated to developing PCL techniques and systems in the HF regime [see, e.g., Ringer and Frazer , ; Thomas et al , ; Fabrizio et al , ; Xianrong et al , ]. The new long wavelength (> 10 m) radio broadcasting format, Digital Radio Mondiale, which is recently being adopted by radio stations in many countries, has been the focus of much of this effort [see, e.g., Thomas et al , ; Xianrong et al , ].…”
