The easily accessible 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl substituent (= Rr ) is shown to be an ideally suited ligand for the stabilization of low-coordinate tin and lead compounds. This ligand allows the preparation of a stable diarylstannylene, (RR)2Sn, as well as the first stable diaryl lead(II) compound, (RF)2Pb. The tin(II) species (RR)2Sn exhibits a rich derivative chemistry. Cycloaddition reactions with various heterocumulenes (ketenes, thioketenes, keteneimines) have been investigated.(RF)2Sn reacts with the stable phosphaalkyne 1 BuCP to give a 1:1 adduct containing a three-membered phosphastannirene ring system. Tin(IV) compounds containing the RF ligand are obtained when (RF )2Sn is treated with Cl2 , XeF2 , AsFs , S4 N4 , (CF3)2NO and 3,5-di-tbutyl-o-benzoquinone. Treatment of (RF)2SnF2 with (Me3Si)20 results in the formation of trimeric [(RF)2SnO]3. In contrast to the diarylstannylene, (RF)2Pb is significantly less reactive. The unsolvated lead!II) thiolate (RFS)2Pb has been obtained by treatment of (RP)2Pb with RFSH. The formation and structural characterization of the unusual lead thiolate cluster Pbs0(SRF)s·2C7He is reported.

“…Depending on the steric demand of the organic substituents they are either polymeric (I, R = Me, Et, Bu, Vinyl, Ph) [1] or trimeric (II, R = CH 2 SiMe 3 , [2] t-Bu, [3,4] Me 2 EtC, [4] (Me 3 Si) 3 C/ Me, [5] 2,6-Me 2 ±C 6 H 3 , [6] 2,6-Et 2 ±C 6 H 3 , [7] 2,4,6-(CF 3 ) 3 ±C 6 H 2 ) [8]. While the six-membered ring structure of the latter compounds, (II), was established by X-ray diffraction studies, the polymeric nature of the former group, (I), was deduced from their virtual insolubility in common organic solvents, 119 Sn Mo È ûbauer, [9,10] and 119 Sn MAS NMR spectroscopy [11] revealing the presence of pentacoordinated tin atoms within these compounds (Chart 1).…”

The single-crystal X-ray structure analysis of hexakis(2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl)cyclotristannoxane, cyclo-[(2,4,6-i-Pr 3 -C 6 H 2 ) 2 SnO] 3 (1), is reported and reveals this compound to contain an almost planar six-membered ring. Redistribution reactions of 1 with cyclo-(t-Bu 2 SnO) 3 and tBu 2 SiCl 2 , respectively, failed and indicate an unusual kinetic inertness of the Sn±O bonds in 1 as compared to related molecular diorganotin oxides containing less bulkier substituents. The redistribution reaction of cyclo-(t-Bu 2 SnO) 3 with cyclo-(t-Bu 2 SnS) 2 leads to an equilibrium involving the trimeric diorganotin oxysulphides cyclo-t-Bu 2 Sn(OSnt-Bu 2 ) 2 S (2 a) and cyclo-t-Bu 2 Sn(SSnt-Bu 2 ) 2 O (2 b).
