Molecular electronics is envisioned as a promising candidate for the nanoelectronics of the future. More than a possible answer to the ultimate miniaturization problem in nanoelectronics, molecular electronics is foreseen as a possible and reasonable way to assemble a large numbers of nanoscale objects (molecules, nanoparticles, nanotubes and nanowires) to form new devices and circuit architectures. It is also an interesting approach to significantly reduce the fabrication costs, as well as the energetical costs of computation, compared to usual semiconductor technologies. Moreover, molecular electronics is a field with a large spectrum of investigations: from quantum objects for testing new paradigms, to hybrid molecular-silicon CMOS devices.

Molecular-scale electronics has now been enriched by the discovery that molecules, studied singly by scanning tunneling spectroscopy, or a large array of those molecules, studied in parallel as a Langmuir-Blodgett monolayer between metal electrodes, exhibit rectification, i.e., an asymmetric current as a function of applied voltage.This asymmetry can come, first, from work function differences between two dissimilar metals or the metal-molecule interfaces (Schottky barriers), second from an asymmetric placement of the chromophore between the two metal electrodes, and third, from an asymmetry of the molecular orbitals of the molecule.This third, electronic origin of rectification, first proposed by Aviram and Ratner in 1974, and confirmed in the work reported here, gives us hope that, not too many years from now, molecules can form the basis of ultra-small yet ultra-fast electronic devices and integrated circuits. # 2002 Elsevier Science (USA)

Boudart), Metzger taught Italian at Stanford (1970− 1971) and chemistry at the University of Mississippi (1971−1986) and the University of Alabama (1986 to present), where he is Professor of Chemistry and former Tricampus Director of the Materials Science Ph.D. Program. Metzger has published 188 papers, edited three books, obtained one patent, graduated 12 Ph.D.'s and 1 M.S., directed the research of 15 undergraduates, and gave talks or spent sabbatical or other leaves in 22 countries. In 1984, he became the first Coulter Professor of Chemistry at the University of Mississippi. In 1998, he received the Blackmon-Moody award of the University of Alabama for exceptional research.
